I assigned my students a freewrite in which they discussed their cultural and social characteristics and then an analysis of where these practices originate. One possibility I gave my students broached the topic of how they "celebrate." This could mean nearly anything, depending on the context, and I purposefully crafted it that way.
I began talking about how some people consider celebration involving alcohol, while others are perfectly satisfied with coffee and conversation in the living room.
One of my students chimed in, "and cake?" I smiled, "Yes, perhaps cake." Another student replied, "Cake? Now We're Really Talking."
This interlude provided such joy for me as a teacher, that I told my students, "I'm going to entitle my next book Cake? Now We're Really Talking and I would dedicate it to Rawan and Jonathan, the originators of the idea.
Well students, let's just see what happens.
