Jefferson Said It!

We hiked out around the tidal basin today. I love the cherry blossoms, don't get me wrong, but when it's accompanied by 5,000 people (mostly tourists saying, "What's that big round building with columns?"), you tend to enjoy the quieter times... a sunset stroll around the tidal basin and a pounce up the steps of The Jefferson Memorial.

I caught this quote during sunset, so the sun leaking through the columns created two large columns of light that framed these words very beautifully.

Consider his words:

I am not an advocate for frequent
changes in laws and constitutions,
but laws and institutions must go
hand in hand with the progress
of the human mind. As that becomes
more developed, more enlightened,
as new discoveries are made, new
truths discovered and manners and
opinions change, with the change
of circumstances, institutions
must advance also to keep pace
with the times. We might as well
require a man to wear still the
coat which fitted him when a boy
as civilized society to remain ever
under the regimen of their
barbarous ancestors.
