Sundials & Daylight Savings

Did you ever think about it?

Well, this past weekend, my husband and I walked through the Smithsonian Castle gardens where there's a sundial. Our adventurous and dorky spirits led us to look at the time and synchronize our cell phones... but... sundials don't abide by Daylight Savings Time. So why do we?

I lived in South Bend, IN from 1999-2003; at the time, Indiana did not switch for Daylight Savings. Half the year, they were EST, the other half of the year, they were CST. To say the least, it was confusing... but we didn't miss much daylight since Indiana is so cloudy in the spring.

Congress recently changed the dates for "spring forward" and "fall back" and all our VCR's and old-timer gadgets are suffering. My husband and I had to reprogram our VCR twice: once for the new congressional date and once for the pre-programmed VCR date.

The question becomes... who is really benefiting from daylight savings now days. Farmers, the folks who the original law was for, hates it because it now messes with their clock work schedule. School kids get up at 6am to catch their bus is today's excuse. But how about the candy industry, where Halloween sales goes up if there is more daylight in the evening. Or tourism, who thrive on evening shopping. Perhaps,if we look at campaign financing, we can see who is behind a how that only causes headaches and delays.
