This article came out in 1977. I'm going to take a leap and suggest that you all add your own list of more modern sets of academic phrases. It's a time-vortex, but it is fun.
Here is the explanation as the journal laid it out. Do recall, back in the 1977, there weren't Folklore Ph.D.'s, there weren't many Sociology Ph.D.'s., and there weren't a lot of Linguistics Ph.D.'s, though I'd love to see what that kit looks like!

Just take one phrase from each Sheet, and put them together in a sentence. If you take them in order, A-B-C-D, the grammar should work itself out (in 1970's terms). But when you start rearranging, say in C-B-A-D order, you may need to add commas.
For those of you who are academics with really great journal hook-ups with your Universities, here's the permanent JSTOR link:

Based on my own fieldwork in Guatemala, a large proportion of intercultural communicative coordination necessitates that coagulative measures be applied to our hedonic Folklife perspectives over a given time-period.
Wow. That's the most academic sentence I've constructed in awhile! What does it mean?
Some more interesting thoughts for this very long blog...
Back before the days of e-mail forwarding... there was postal forwarding, and this F.A.R.K. packet would come in the mail with a Great Curse of Helsinki warning (whatever that entails) if you did not forward it to 5 people. The kind and gracious recipient would have to xerox the letter five times (for about $1 unless you had access to a free copier), come up with postage for 5 letters, and spend the time it takes for copying, addressing envelopes, and walking out to the mailbox. (By the way, this makes me wonder how and when and why the Post Office decided it was okay for the mail deliverer to walk down every sidewalk up to the front porch instead of street-side mailboxes.)
